I always wanted to be a great hostess, but I realized over the years that I wasn't really taught about the essence of hospitality. Like most things in my life, I thought it was about mastering tasks like decorating and cooking and doing it all effortlessly and brilliantly. What my time in South Africa and in monastic retreat houses has taught me is that great hospitality is grounded in love--love of self and neighbor. I've also learned from my daughter's husband's big Italian family is that it is all about a relaxed come-as-you-are mentality that makes everyone feel accepted and loved. Listen to my podcast here on hospitality--like many things, I am still learning not to make hospitality something at which to succeed but a way of life that gives life and love.
